Parts
of Computer
A computer is an electronic
machine that can accept data, store data, process it,
and then produce meaningful information. It works with the help of
electricity and follows the instructions given by the user.
A computer is designed to
perform many tasks such as calculations, typing documents, playing games,
searching information on the internet, storing files, and controlling machines.
Computers work based on a system called IPO Cycle
—
Input → Process → Output.
A computer is made up of many parts that work
together. These parts are mainly divided into Hardware and Software.
Hardware (Physical Parts of Computer)
Hardware refers to all the physical, touchable
parts of the computer.
A. Input
Devices: These parts are used to enter data into the
computer.
Examples and Description:
- Keyboard:
Used for typing letters, numbers, and commands.
- Mouse:
Helps point, click, and select items on the screen.
- Scanner:
Converts paper documents/pictures into digital form.
- Microphone:
Helps record voice or give audio input.
- Webcam:
Captures photos and videos.
B. Output Devices: These
parts display or produce the result from the computer.
Examples and Description:
- Monitor:
Shows text, images, videos (like a TV screen).
- Printer:
Prints documents and pictures on paper.
- Speakers:
Produce sound and music.
- Projector:
Displays computer screen on a big wall or board.
C. Processing Unit (CPU): The
CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the brain of the computer. It
processes all instructions and data.
The CPU has three main parts:
- ALU
(Arithmetic Logic Unit):
Does all mathematical calculations and logical decisions. - CU
(Control Unit):
Controls and manages the working of all devices. - MU
(Memory Unit):
Stores data temporarily during processing.
D. Storage Devices: These are used to store
data permanently or temporarily.
Examples:
- Hard
Disk / SSD: Main storage inside the computer.
- Pen
Drive: Portable storage device.
- CD/DVD:
Used for storing files and media.
- Memory
Card: Used in mobiles and cameras.
- RAM
(Random Access Memory): Temporary memory
for running programs.
- ROM
(Read Only Memory): Stores startup instructions.
E. Internal Hardware Components:
- Motherboard:
The main circuit board that connects all parts.
- Power
Supply Unit: Provides electric power to the
computer.
- Graphics
Card: Helps display high-quality graphics and videos.
- Cooling
Fan: Keeps the CPU cool during work.
Software (Programs of the Computer)
Software is the set of instructions
that tells the computer what to do. You cannot touch software.
Examples:
Windows, MS Word, Google Chrome, Games, Apps.
Peripheral Devices (Extra Devices)
These are optional devices connected to the
computer for extra functions.
Examples:
Printer, Webcam, External Hard Disk, Speakers, USB devices.
