Software and its Types

Software is a set of instructions, programs, or data that tells a computer how to perform specific tasks. It controls the functioning of the hardware and allows users to operate the computer.

Examples:

MS Word, Windows, Chrome, games, mobile apps.

 

Types of Software

1. System Software

System software controls and manages the overall working of the computer.  It helps the hardware and other software to work smoothly.

Examples:

  • Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, macOS)
  • Device Drivers
  • Utility Software (antivirus, disk cleaner)

Why it is important:
Without system software, a computer cannot function at all.

 

2. Application Software

Application software is designed to perform specific tasks for the user. It helps people do work like writing, drawing, calculating, learning, or entertainment.

Examples:

  • MS Word, Excel
  • Web browsers (Chrome, Firefox)
  • Media players
  • Games
  • Educational apps

 

3. Programming Software

Programming software is used by programmers to create new software. It provides tools to write, test, and debug code.

Examples:

  • Python
  • C, C++
  • Java
  • Code editors (VS Code)
