Types of Articles
Articles in English are divided into two main types:
1. Indefinite Articles –
A and An
These articles are used when we talk about something non-specific,
general, or not known to the listener.
How they are used:
- “A”
is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.
Example: a cat, a ball, a teacher - “An”
is used before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
Example: an apple, an egg, an honest man
(Note: “honest” starts with h but the sound is vowel, so we use “an”)
2. Definite Article – The
“The” is used when we
talk about something specific, particular, or already known
to the listener.
How it is used:
- Used
for unique things: the sun, the moon
- Used
for specific persons/items: the girl who won the race
- Used
for superlatives: the best, the tallest
- Used
for names of rivers, oceans, mountain ranges: the Ganga, the
Pacific Ocean, the Himalayas
