Adjective and its Types

An adjective is a word that describes or gives more information about a noun or a pronoun. It tells us something about the quality, size, color, number, shape, or condition of a person, place, or thing.

Examples:

  • A beautiful flower. (beautiful describes the flower)
  • He is a tall boy. (tall describes the boy)
  • She has three books. (three describes the number of books)

 

Types of Adjectives

1. Descriptive Adjectives

These adjectives describe the quality, appearance, shape, or size of a noun.


Examples: beautiful girl, tall building, red dress, cold water.

 

2. Quantitative Adjectives

They tell us how much or how many.


Examples: some rice, little water, many books, several students.

 

3. Numerical (Number) Adjectives

They show exact numbers or the order of things.

  • Cardinal numbers: one, two, three
  • Ordinal numbers: first, second, third


Examples: three apples, first prize.

 

4. Demonstrative Adjectives

They point out which person or thing we are talking about. Examples: this, that, these, those


Example sentences: this book, those cars.

 

5. Possessive Adjectives

They show ownership or possession.


Examples: my bag, your phone, his car, her dress, their house.

 

6. Interrogative Adjectives

Used to ask questions about nouns.


Examples: which book?, what idea?, whose pen?
